Pop Up Scherenschnitte Hearts and Doves Tutorial

Tutorial for the scherenschnitte hearts and doves card from this post.

The pop up mechanism of this card is a double V-fold.

The pictures show the plain paper version so you can see the construction details a bit better.

Make the double V-fold mechanism

Cut a piece of card stock twice as long as it is tall and crease in the center to create two squares.

Crease along the diagonals of the squares.

Cut along the green lines.

Fold rectangle in half. You will have a double layer square.

Pinch the fold as shown.

Now push and pinch the bottom layer.

Glue the two loose flaps together.

Pinch both pleats flat, meeting them along the center line of piece. Pull up the bottom flap to align with the top flap.

This sets in the diagonal creases from the center point to each side.

Cut off the points where they extend above the edges of the top and bottom flaps. Unfold.

Completed double V-fold mechanism.

Attach hearts to V-fold

Cut out your heart pieces.

Start by attaching the whole (blue) heart to the V-fold mechanism.

Lightly mark the center line of the heart. Slide the heart between the standing Vs.

Push one V to the side. Line up the center of the heart and the fold of the V.

Tape together.

Now flip the V to the other side and tape.

The tape makes a hinge.

Repeat on the back side of the heart, taping to the other V-fold.

Now attach the two "outline" hearts (pink).

Fold outline heart in half at the midline.

Lay outline heart on top of whole heart and align centers. Tape the top of the outline heart to the whole heart at the center line.

Flip the folded heart to the other side and repeat.

Open out the V-fold at the bottom and spread glue inside the fold.

Partially unfold the outline heart. Push the bottom of the outline heart into the V-fold, aligning center fold lines. Let dry.

Flip the entire thing over and repeat with the other outline heart.

Attach the heart to the card base

Flatten the V-fold, folding the outline hearts in half and pushing one to the right, and one to the left.

Place the point of the V-fold on the center fold line of the base card. Align the top of the V-fold parallel to the center fold of the card. (Measure up from the center fold to the top of either end of the V-fold to check). Spread glue on the center of the V-fold.

Hold the heart in place as you close the card. Allow to dry briefly.

Flip over and glue the other side.

Place a flat weight on the card and let dry completely.
